Bead Detection
Dispensed adhesive, sealant and gasket materials are used extensively throughout an automobile’s construction. These materials are robotically applied to exterior components for lighting and tail lamp sealing, interior components for acoustical sound deadening and water shielding as well as powertrain gaskets for engine and transmission assemblies. In applications for powertrain, it is critical that the gasket sealant is correctly dispensed in the right location, has the proper width and has no gaps that would result in fluid leakage. The solution requires a sensing methodology capable of evaluating the area, perform measurements and contend with variables in the parts position related to material handling. Banner’s PresencePLUS® vision sensors are suitable for use in a wide variety of area sensing applications where measurements are needed and target placement is not repeatable. In this example, a P4 OMNI vision sensor with a high intensity blue ring light utilizes Banner’s unique “Bead” algorithm to insure the dispensed gasket material is properly placed and that there are no gaps or smears related to a process problem. The Bead tool allows for simple setup of the region of interest that must envelop the complex shape of the dispensed material as well as setting acceptable tolerances for bead width.
